London-Western High-School Wrestling Invitational, Nov 28, 2009.  Report by Coach Milad Mohib

The London Western-Wrestling Club hosted its annual tournament on November 28th, 2009 at Thames Hall of the University of Western Ontario.  Ten members participated as representatives of the club with several outstanding performances resulting in a strong outing for the club. Our wrestlers displayed tremendous skill as well as great energy and effort on the mats. The boys placed 3rd overall in team standings.  Congratulations to the team who performed well. We are looking to continue our success and improve our performance in upcoming tournaments.

London-Western members who represent the club at the London-Western HS Invitational are to weigh-in on Thursday Nov 26 during practice.  Check the tournament information sheet for exact weights.  http://westernwrestling.ca/london-western/?page_id=111

Team members are to represent their school team first if their team competes or whenever possible.

NOTE:  Red-dot weigh-in check will be in effect.  That is, random weight checks will be made Saturday morning.  Wrestlers with red-dot have the following morning allowance:  1 kg for weight classes up to 50 kg.  2 kg for up to 70 kg.  3 kg over 70 kg.

Four London-Western team members are ready for the New York Athletic Club Holiday International, Nov 21, 22.  Jennifer Nguyen (51 kg), Brianne Barry (55 kg), Olivia Gunnell (55 kg) and Liz Sera (59 kg) will compete in the NYAC international tournament in NY City.  The international tournament is a strong event in both the men’s and women’s divisions and is attended by top wrestlers from USA, Canada, Russia and several other countries.  Coach Dave Spinney will travel with the team.

Girls only Wrestling Clinic

Sessions will be run by Katie Patroch with the assistance of the UWO women’s team.  Katie is a member of the National Senior Women’s team and placed 5th at the 2009 World Championships.  She also holds Pan American and Commonwealth Championship titles.

Harry Geris and Bill Salter were honoured at the London Sports Council Hall of Fame and Spirit of Sport Volunteer Recognition Awards, Nov 5 at Western Fair’s Carousel Room.

Ilya Abelev won the gold medal at the McMaster Invitational, October 31/09.  The defending juvenile (U18) national champion, representing London-Western, won four matches in the 65 kg weight class.  Ilya attends Central Elgin HS in St. Thomas who previously competed for the National Capital Wrestling Club.
