Hamilton, ON – Western’s Wrestling team started their season on Sunday, competing at the McMaster Invitational. The Men took home the team title, while Western came third overall in the combined team standings.
The Mustangs had a strong showing, collecting seven medals and a first-place team finish for the men. The men’s team won the team title ahead of host McMaster and the University of Alberta, who were third. The men were led by two gold medals, Charlie Ortencio and Lukas Geske.
Charlie, a first-year Mustang, went 4-0 on the day to collect the gold. Last season’s OUA gold medalist, Lukas, picked up four straight wins en route to the gold medal. Other medalists by the men included silver medals by Zachary Ortencio and Hassan Al-Hayawi. Picking up bronze medals for Western were Duncan Blake and Patrick Salvador Guzman.
“It was a good start to the season for us. Our wrestlers had a chance to get back on the mats and compete,” said head coach Scott Proctor. “They have been working hard the past two months in practices, and it was nice to see them get an opportunity to showcase that hard work at a tournament.”
The women’s team placed fifth overall. Jonelle Clarke was the lone medalist for Western, picking up a bronze medal at 59 kg.
“As a team, we approach these early tournaments as an opportunity to see what areas we need to work on,” said Proctor. “We are looking for feedback from the matches, and then we will get back into the practice room and make the necessary changes so we continue to improve.”
Western finished third overall in the combined division.
“We had several great performances today,” concluded Proctor. “We are happy with the effort of the wrestlers competing today, and we are excited to continue to see them improve as the season progresses.”
Next up for the Mustangs is the TMU Open on November 13th.
