Wrestling Recruit Class 2020-21

London, ON – The Western Wrestling team has announced they are set to welcome 7 new recruits to their program for the 2020-21 season.

“This is one of the best-recruiting classes we have had in a long time,” said Mustangs Head Coach Scott Proctor. “These recruits will help us fill some gaps in our line-up that we have due to graduation, they are all hard-working student-athletes who have enormous potential; they are a great addition to our team and the Western community.”

All recruits come to Western from across Ontario with several coming from London and area.

Why I chose Western:
“I chose Western because it feels right. I started wrestling when I was 6 years old and I started at Western. I think this will be a nice return to home.”

Coach’s Thoughts:
“Owen comes to us with a lot of potential as a wrestler. He has solid fundamentals. We are excited to start coaching him and believe that he will be a great team member. His addition to our team strengthens our middleweights; his versatility in his weight gives our team flexibility in our line-up.”

Kendall Dettloff

Why I chose Western:
“I chose Western because it has the perfect mix of social and academic aspects. I knew from a young age that Nursing was my passion and Western was the school that I wanted to study at. With Western being so close to home, I have been able to train on the fields for soccer games and practices, wrestle in alumni hall, and attend many science events affiliated through my high school. Every time I attend a Western event, it is organized and fun, but most importantly I’ve noticed that the students who run it are motivated and happy. I am so excited to be a Western student next year and know that despite the circumstances Western will still help make my first year memorable.”

“Kendall is an excellent addition to our strong women’s team; she is extremely hard working and very coachable. Kendall has outstanding offence and defence. She will have an immediate impact on our program; we are excited to have her as a Mustang. We expect her to be a leader on our team in the years to come.”

Why I chose Western:
“I chose western because for as long as a can remember I wanted to be a Mustang. Growing up playing and being really involved with sports, I always saw myself eventually being accepted to and hopefully being on a varsity team at Western. Furthermore, My father and my grand father are western alumni and my father was a varsity athlete so its always been my goal of mine to follow in their footsteps. Western is also an amazing school for so many other reasons which made my choice even easier.”

“As a kid coming from Western’s wrestling age group program, I’ve been exposed to the coaches, athletes and trainers. I always wanted to continue growing in my sport and knew Western was my fit. Not to mention Western is one of the top schools in Canada for its academics and research; it was a no brainer for me to come here.”

Why I chose Western:
“I began my journey as a wrestler in grade nine at H.B. Beal Secondary School, and I fell in love with the sport. I was not very good, but I devoted myself every day.  My high school coach recommended that I join a club for those who were passionate about wrestling, such as myself, so I joined the London-Western Wrestling Club. At first, I felt overwhelmed and scared, but the couches quickly made me feel welcomed and a part of a family. The feeling was genuinely amazing. I am the person I am today because of the Western team and the Western community. They encourage me to better myself, to be the best me I can be. I chose Western because here I am part of a family, a special bond only a few people get. I feel honoured to be a part of Western.”
