FISU, Canada Cup update

FISU (World University) Trials, June 29/12 (Guelph)

It was a great day on the mats for two Mustang wrestlers at the FISU Trials being held in Guelph, Ont. Steven Takahashi (55 kg) and Ilya Abelev (66 kg class) both won their respective classes to earn a spot on Team Canada at the upcoming FISU World University Wrestling Championships. The Championships take place October 2-7 in Kuortane, Finland.

Takahashi defeated Rafiq Charania (UNB) in two straight rounds in the final, while Abelev defeated Scott Schiller (Concordia) in his 66 kg final. Both Takahashi and Abelev are two-time CIS Champions and previously earned a spot to compete in the World Junior Championships in Thailand this September.  They will join incoming transfer recruit, Madi Parks who will compete in the women’s 51 kg division.

 Canada Cup, June 30/12 (Guelph)

Several Mustangs representing the London-Western Wrestling Club had solid results at the Canada Cup International Wrestling Tournament held in Guelph, Ont. CIS medalists Steven Takahashi and Brianne Barry, both from London, Ont., each earned a bronze medal in their respective gender’s 55 kg weight classes. Ilya Abelev placed 4th in after losing an exciting bronze medal match vs. Andy Moreno (Cuba) 66 kg opponent (see photo above).  Larissa D’Alleva (63 kg)and Liz Sera (55 kg) both placed 5th in their respective divisions. 

 In the Pre-Junior Canada Cup (U18), July 1, Anna McKee (49 kg FW) and Kyle Bonk (95 kg) both won bronze in their respective divisions. 

Team members stayed to participate in the Canada Cup training camp which included members of Canada’s Olympic team, along with top level athletes from across Canada.
