Mustangs Back on the Mats

After over a year and a half without any competition, the Western Mustangs wrestling hit the mats on Sunday, Nov. 7th, to compete at the McMaster invitational. The tournament saw teams from all across the OUA. The Mustang team was led by Paige Baynham and Anthony Parker, who both brought home the gold medal. Paige, coming off winning a silver medal with the Western Women’s Tennis team at the OUA championships just a few weeks ago, won two straight matches on route to her gold medal performance. Anthony, a U Sports bronze medallist in 2020, his last competition before today, won all four of his matches to claim the gold. “It was really exciting finally getting back on the mats and seeing our team compete again. We had a good showing from some of our veterans, including Anthony Paker and Paige Baynham, both taking home gold,” commented assistant coach Steven Takahashi. Takahashi went on to say, “ We had some notable performances from some of our new team members competing as a Mustang for their first time. Second-year wrestler Patrick Salvador Guzman and first-year mustang Duncan Blake both coming home with medals and showing good prospects for a young team”.

In total, the Mustangs brought home nine medals. “ I thought it was an excellent first tournament back for our team,” head coach Scott Proctor said. “The team was very excited to get a chance to compete again after a long layoff. We had some great performances, and most importantly, the coaching staff had a chance to see what we need to work on to continue to improve.”

Next up for the Mustangs is the Ryerson Open on Sunday, Nov. 14th.
