7 Mustangs qualify for U Sports Championships
Western travel to Guelph on Saturday to take part in the OUA Championships. 7 Mustangs qualified for the U Sports championships in Calgary at the end of February and both the Men’s and Women’s team placed 4th, the women were 2 points out of 3rd place. Brayden Ambo led the men placing second in the 82kg division. Brayden beat the number 1 seeded wrestler in the weight class to reach the final. In the final Brayden lost a highly competitive match. The match ended 5-5 and Brayden lost on criteria. Brayden, one of the Captains of this years team, was 4th at last years U Sports championships. The other two captains Julie Steffler and Michalia Walls both qualified. Julie placed 2nd in the 59kg division. Steffler lost in the finals to Brock’s Hannah Taylor, last years U Sports Champion. Michalia placed 3rd in the 63kg weight class after losing a close opening match. Christine Grafe placed 3rd at 48kg. Wrestling in his first OUA championships first year athlete Hassan Al-Hayawi placed 3rd at 65kg. Jackson Browning placed 3rd at 100kg. Anthony Parker qualified in the 120kg division by placing 3rd.
