Takahashi Wins, Mustagns earn 3 medals at Guelph Open
The Mustang wrestling team traveled to Guelph to compete at the Guelph Open on Sunday January 20th. The Guelph Open is one of the top tournaments in Canada attracting teams from all across the country as well a number of American teams. The Mustangs performed well, collecting a number of top 6 finishes. Julie Steffler placed 2nd in the 59kg weight class. The Mustangs collected 2 bronze medals by Michalia Walls at 62kg and Jackson Browning at 97kg. Other Mustangs finishing in the top 6 were Mackenzie Smallwood and Bennet Jaworski both placing 5th at 53kg and 79kg respectively. Current Assistant coach Steven Takahashi, competing for the London-Western Wrestling Club won gold in the 57kg division. This is Steven’s first tournament back since undergoing neck surgery in the summer. Adam MacFayden also competing of the London-Western Wrestling Club placed 5th in the 65kg division. Next weekend is a busy one for the Mustangs as team members will be competing in both the Junior Provincial Championships and the Western Open. Both events are being held in Alumni Hall with the Junior Provincial Championships taking place on Saturday, starting at 10:30 a.m., and the Western Open running on Sunday starting at 9:30 a.m.
