McMaster Invitational Wrestling Tournament Results 

October 31, 2009 (Hamilton)

Although placing 5th overall as a team, the women mustangs finished just 3 points behind Brock’s 19 points, and both were the top two OUA teams in the highly competitive women’s division at the McMaster Invitational.  A strong team from the University of Cumberlands (Kentucky) took top spot with 42 points, well ahead of the Black Bears W.C. (NB) who finished with 26 points, and third place Missouri Valley with 20 points.   The mustangs edged 6th place U of Alberta by one point who finished with 15 points.  At the last year’s OUA Championships (Feb 2009), the women mustangs were 2nd overall behind defending champions, Brock.

Top mustang performers were Liz Sera (63 kg) and Lesley McCallum (55 kg) who placed second and third respectively in their individual weight classes.  Teammate, Jennifer Nguyen was 4th at 51 kg.    

The mustang men were shut-out of the medals in the 21 team competition with three mustangs placing in the top six.  Freshman, Eric Jacobson placed 6th in a highly competitive 72 kg weight class losing to defending CIS champion, Chad Lee (Lakehead) who ended in 5th.  Brock Wrestling Club placed first overall in team standings with 32 points ahead of Guelph and Lakehead who finished close behind with 30 and 29 points respectively.  Ilya Abelev, representing the London-Western Wrestling Club placed first in the 65 kg weight class.  Abelev, a transfer from Ottawa now attending Central Elgin (St. Thomas) is the defending Juvenile (U18) national champion.  Mustang teammates, Adam Burns and Ben Spitzke placed 4th and 6th respectively in the 54 kg weight class.
