Men win Bronze, Women Silver at Sr Provincials, Nov 27, 2010
The women repeated their 2nd overall team placing at the Ontario Senior Wrestling Championships in St. Catharines, but the men’s bronze was a substantial improvement from 6th place in 2009. Mustang rookie Ilya Abelev wrestled well — well enough to win the gold, but then only to have it taken away from him. In the 66 kg men’s final, Abelev defeated Brock’s CJ Hudson, but the Brock camp protested a controversial leg takedown counter that was upheld and forced a sudden-death protest round. Ilya scored first and was on his way to win when he was countered in the final seconds to lose the protest round.

Mustang rookie, Steven Takahashi also won silver losing to Brock Wrestling Club’s Jake Hergenhein in the 55 kg division. Takahashi defeated last year’s OUA champion, Gaston Tardiff (Lakehead) to advance to the final. The men’s team placed 3rd overall with 22 points, behind Guelph (37 points) and host Brock (33 points). London-Western’s Richard Balfour won bronze at 60 kg, while other mustangs placing in the top six were Eric Jacobson (4th at 74 kg), Josh Proctor (6th at 66 kg) and Josh Dawson (6th at 74 kg).

Mustangs, Brianne Barry (55 kg) and Larissa D’Alleva (63 kg) both won silver in their respective divisions while London-Western teammate Olivia Gunnell won bronze at 59 kg. Other mustang place finishers were Liz Sera (4th at 55 kg), Sahana Mazumder (5th at 48 kg), Elhame Gashi (6th at 48 kg) and Monica Varallo (6th at 67 kg). London-Western teammates, Ramona Balfour (4th at 48 kg) and Sara Pattenaude (5th at 55 kg) also contributed to overall team points, edging Guelph who finished 3rd overall with 18 points.
