Balfour, Abelev, and Takahashi win gold at Brock Open, January 15, 2011

Western takes team title.

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – Rookie wrestler Steven Takahashi won gold and was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the Brock Open Wrestling tournament on Jan. 15. Takahashi defeated defending OUA and CIS champion, Sujon Mazumder (U of T) in two straight rounds 4-1, 6-0 in the 54 kg final.

Teammate and fellow rookie, Ilya Abelev won gold in the 68 kg final.  Laurier SS student, Richard Balfour, representing London-Western , defeated second-year mustang teammate Tim Bartja in the 61 kg final.

The top woman for the Mustangs was second year student, Larissa D’Alleva who took home the silver in the 63 kg division.  Teammate, Liz Sera won 4 matches and lost to eventual champion Diana Ford (Brock) in the 55 kg division to take the bronze medal.
