Five mustangs going for medals after Day 1

CIS Wrestling Championships (Calgary).  March 5, 2010

Five mustangs are going for medals after the day 1 of the CIS Wrestling Championships in Calgary.  Two mustangs have reached the finals.  Brianne Barry (55 kg) and Larissa D’Alleva (63 kg) both went undefeated and are guaranteed at least a CIS silver medal.  Brianne defeated Laura Christensen (Guelph) in two straight rounds, 9-3, 6-0, and Laura Gordon (SFU) 4-0, 5-0.  The London Central HS graduate and mustang rookie will face defending champion, Jillian Gallays of Saskatchewan in the finals.   Teammate, Larissa  had a perfect record after day 1, pinning both her opponents — Jessy Seida (Calgary) and Hilary Rafia (Guelph).  Larissa will face last year’s bronze medallist, Danielle Lepage in the 63 kg final.

Three going for Bronze:  Mustang rookie Eric Jacobson will go for bronze at 72 kg.  The Dorchester SS graduate will face SFU’s Arminder Virk, while mustang, Jennifer Nguyen faces Jasmine Slinn (Regina) at 51 kg.  Teammate, Liz Sera will face Lakehead’s Aislynn Torfason at 59 kg in the 3rd and 4th place match. 

Three mustangs are going for 5th/6th.  Sahana Mazumder will face Haley Thomas (Alberta) at 48 kg.  Jennifer Archibald will compete against Alison Leslie of Guelph at 67 kg, and Christine Schmidt will face Concordia’s, Veronica Keefe (72 kg).  Teammate, Monica Varallo will face Lee Anna Taillefer (Brock) in the 7th/8th match.
