Two London-Western team members medal at Francophonie Games
Former mustang, Steven Takahashi won the gold medal in the wrestling event with a perfect 3-0 win-loss record, while King’s student, Caleb Rutner grabbed the bronze in the 70 kg division.
The Games of La Francophonie are held every four years, bringing together around 3,000 young athletes and artists from member and observer states and governments of La Francophonie. The Games are unique in that they are the only major international games that feature both sport and cultural competitions.
Takahashi defeated Mikhatar Grigoryan (Armenia) in the final by pin. Earlier he defeated J. Pomo Longondo (COD) 12-2, and M. Filip (ROU) 11-4. Rutner defeated Ambassa Nya Benoit (Cameroon) 12-1 for the bronze. Earlier, he lost to Roman Duscov (ROU) 1-6. Takahashi clinched the gold when he executed a double leg tackle that took Grigoryan straight to his back for a pin.
Takahashi will compete at the upcoming World Senior Championships in Paris, August 25, 2017.
