Mustang Women Place 2nd Men 4th, at TMU Open
The Western wrestling team travelled to TMU on Sunday, Nov. 13th, to compete at the TMU Open. The Mustangs had several strong showings. The women’s team placed second overall, and the Men’s team was 4th. In the combined division, the Mustangs placed 2nd. Ella Doornaert and Faith Telford led the women’s team, winning gold. Ella, competing in the 63 kg division, was a perfect 3-0 on the day. Faith had an undefeated record of 3-0. Telford won all three of her matches by pin, including a win over last year’s OUA champion in the semi-final. Kendall Dettloff was the other female medal winner, claiming silver at 53kg. The Mustang men picked up one gold medal. First-year King’s student Treye Trotman, competing in his first OUA tournament, picked up four wins to secure the gold. Trotman outscored his opponents 34-1. Other medalists for the Mustang men included Duncan Blake, who won silver at 57kg, Hassan Al-Hayawi, who was second at 65 kilograms and Lukas Geske, who won bronze at 82kg. “Overall, it was an excellent tournament for our team. The goal coming into the tournament was to get as many matches as possible and to work on the techniques we have been drilling in practice,” commented head coach Scott Proctor. “Many athletes had strong performances; Lukas Geske wrestled exceptionally well all day. He had seven matches, going 6-1. Hassan wrestled an extremely good semi-final to reach the finals, where, unfortunately, he was hampered by an ankle injury and couldn’t wrestle to his full potential,” noted Proctor. “Ella and Faith both had some close matches and found ways to win, which is great to see at this stage in the season.” Next up for the wrestles is the York Open on Nov. 20th.
