Caledonia, ON – The Mustangs had an impressive performance at the Ontario Winter Open in Caledonia this weekend, picking up eight medals, including an exceptional four golds.

First-year Mustang Gavin Eldridge returned to action after recovering from a knee injury suffered in November and looked great, winning the gold in the 61 KG division.

“Gavin wrestled well all day and beat a very accomplished wrestler in the finals. It’s great to see Gavin back on the mats competing after starting his season with an injury,” commented head coach Scott Proctor.

Paige Baynham had an excellent tournament going 3-0 and winning the gold medal. Baynham pinned her first opponent and then won two hard-fought matches against opponents from PEI and Montreal. This is Paige’s 4th individual gold of the season.

4th-year wrestler Ella Doornaert picked up a gold in the 65 KG class. Ella outscored her first two opponents 24-2 before pinning her final opponent to claim the gold. Faith Telford picked up the Mustang’s fourth individual gold going 2-0 on the day. Faith secured the gold by pinning both her opponents. “For some of our athletes, this was their first competition back in two years, and they performed with a tremendous amount of heart and perseverance. We had outstanding performances from Gavin, Faith, Ella, and Paige, who all fought through tough matches to get to their gold medals. We continue to see the team growing as a whole and individual athletes constantly developing as the season progresses,” noted assistant coach Madi Parks.

Two London-Western Wrestling Club members also picked up gold medals. Keeyan Trotman went 2-0 on the day to win the 61kg division. Incoming recruit Treye Trotman had an impressive showing winning all four of his matches without giving up a point. In addition to the four gold medals, the Mustangs picked up silver medals by Aqil Syed 57kg and Lukas Geske 79kg, and two bronze medals by Sydney Clavet 59kg and Olivia Disimone 69 kg. “Our coaching staff is happy with today’s results and are excited to see our athletes continue to improve as we keep our focus on being our best at the OUA Championships at the beginning of April,” Proctor added.
