London, ON – The Mustangs Wrestling brought the action to their home turf as they hosted the Western Open in Alumni Hall on Sunday.

The Men’s team finished 3rd overall, collections three individual medals led by Gavin Eldridge winning the 61kg division. This is the second weekend in a row that Eldridge has won gold.

“Gavin wrestled well all day. A few of his matches were close at the beginning, but Gavin maintained an aggressive pace and was able to wear his opponents down and secure the wins,” said Mustangs Head Coach Scott Proctor.

Other men medalists include Brayden Ambo at 90kg and Thomas Fortier at 100kg, both winning silver medals.

Ella Doornaert led the women to a fourth-place team finish. Doornaert won gold in the 63kg division.

“Ella had a tough final match. She was down after the first round, but one of Ella’s strengths is her conditioning; she gets stronger as the match goes on. She stuck to her game plan, didn’t panic, and came back in the second round to pin her opponent and win the match,” noted Proctor.

Other medalists for the Women’s team were Paige Baynham, who won silver at 72kg and Sydney Clavet, who won bronze at 56kg.

Next up for the Mustangs is the Western Invitational on Sunday, March 20th, in Alumni Hall starting at 9:30 a.m. This will be the final competition for Mustangs before the OUA championships at Brock on April 2nd.
